Brain Training Exercises for Increased Productivity and Enhanced Job Performance

It’s no secret – as we age, our brain function declines. However, recent studies indicate that keeping mentally active can help to maintain cognitive functioning, boost productivity, and enhance job performance.

Neuroplasticity

Human brains have the unique ability to grow and change. Neuroplasticity, or brain plasticity, is the brain’s ability to change and grow at every stage and age of our lives. This neurological flexibility plays an essential role in the development or deterioration of our brains.

Neural connections and pathways can be created or separated. Gray matter, which contains most of the brain’s neuronal cell bodies, can expand or contract. From physical activity to brain training exercising, regardless of your age, you can improve your brain’s neuroplasticity.

Brain Training and Neuroplasticity

Brain training is based on the foundation that mental stimulation can improve neuroplasticity. Brain exercises help your mental health and fitness in the same way your body benefits from physical fitness and balanced nutrition.

Most of us live our lives in a series of fixed routines. For example, we wake up, shower, eat breakfast, head to work, commute home, make dinner, and complete our nightly routine. We tend to drive the same way to work, and rarely stray from our routine path. While these routines and daily patterns help to simplify life, they also limit decision making.

Just as the body becomes soft and lethargic from lack of physical activity, the human brain becomes slow and sluggish from too much routine. Brain training helps to keep our cognitive ability fresh, growing, and changing.

Brain Training Exercises

The simplest of brain training exercises can be completed on a daily basis within the comfort of your home or workplace. Here are a few simple brain training exercises designed to improve cognitive ability, increase productivity, and enhance job performance.

Switch handsUsing your non-dominant hand, even occasionally, results in increased brain activity. If you are right-handed, consider using your left hand to complete simple tasks. From brushing your teeth and eating to using your computer mouse, switching to your non-dominant hand provides a great brain workout.

Backward or upside downStimulate your brain by looking at things upside down. This doesn’t necessarily mean standing on your head. You can start simple, by wearing your watch upside down or turning your clock upside down. Reading upside down or backward forces your brain to think every time you look at the time.

Read aloudOne of the earliest demonstrations of brain imaging clearly showed three distinct brain regions lighting up when the same word was read, spoken, or heard. The simple task of reading aloud engages the imagination and brain in a new and different way. Take turns reading and listening to a book with your children, family, or friends. It will engage your brain in new ways.
